about

This album features selections from some of the original scores written, performed and produced by the composer, John Pattison for Alan Ayckbourn plays during twenty years working as Musical Director and Composer at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, UK. All of the productions included in this selection were directed by Ayckbourn.

Alan Ayckbourn once stated that he creates movies for the stage. Music was an important part of the process for him. I would sit in rehearsals and ‘spot’ each cue with Alan. I wrote the cues following the actors and working closely with the script. Sometimes scores were played live, but more often than not they were recorded so that we could create as full a sound as possible. Cues were often made up of multiple elements across several playback machines. These elements all came together to give the impression of a full movie score following the action. Also for each of these productions, he asked me to create a piece of music that worked like the end credits in a movie. These compositions took many of the themes that had been used throughout each play and reworked them into a memorable track that gave a final musical statement for each production. Many of the tracks included here were composed for this purpose.

These tracks were created whilst working as part of some extremely talented and imaginative creative teams. Working alongside some of the most gifted designers and lighting designers in the industry was a privilege and also hugely inspiring.

Special mention goes to the following for making the journey so enjoyable and fulfilling: Mick Hughes (Lighting Design), Roger Glossop (Design), Micheal Holt (Design), Jackie Staines (Lighting and Sound Design), Kath Geraghty (Lighting and Sound Design), Juliet Nichol (Design), Pip Leckenby (Design), Micheael Roberts (Design), Jan Bee Brown (Design) Paul Stear (Lighting and Sound Design), Ben Vickers (Lighting and Sound Design), Paul Towson (Lighting Design) Frank Matthews (Master Carpenter) and all the other stage management teams and technical crews who worked tirelessly and inventively over the years to bring all these productions to life.

Finally, a huge thank you to Alan Ayckbourn for writing and producing the plays, and for choosing me and my music to complement so many fantastic productions.
