Body Language

This is the first play written and directed by Alan Ayckbourn that I composed for. It was to be the beginning of a long and fruitful creative relationship. I arrived in Scarborough in the Summer of 1988 to arrange dance music for Peter King’s ‘The Ballroom’ directed by Alan. That production featured me on piano and five life sized animated dummies with casts of my head playing trumpet, two saxophones, bass and drums. In 1989 I was responsible for creating three shows for the Summer programme. Alan then asked me to join the company as Resident Musical Director that Autumn. I began work on Body Language in Spring 1990.

We thoroughly enjoyed working together and this led to me writing music for some one hundred and thirty productions for the Scarborough based company and over thirty Ayckbourn plays. We have also written two full length musicals together ‘Dreams from a Summer House’ (1992) and ‘A Word from our Sponsor’ (1995). Both of these are published by Samuel French Ltd.

World Premiere: 21 May 1990
Venue: Theatre in the Round
Revised version: 1999
Venue: The Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round
