about

Snake in the Grass

This score involved many different elements. The wind chime onstage formed the basis of the main theme. Each chime was sampled and mapped at different velocities then used melodically to signify that something supernatural was about to happen. The wind chime was activated by a member of stage management with some fishing wire hiding under a trapdoor onstage. This production also used quarter ear drones to great effect. A tuned drone of a surround sound Aeolian Harp was introduced in the speakers behind the audience to give them the feeling that there was something behind them. This effect literally raised the hairs on the back of their necks. We first used this technique in a production of Othello featuring Michael Gambon at Westwood. The drone and the ensuing music had to be in Eb to match the pitch of the resident Air Conditioning. Luckily the system at the current SJT is much quieter but coincidentally, the onstage wind chimes for Snake in The Grass just happened to be in Eb too, so the tradition carried on! The original 2002 production featured Fiona Mollison, Suzie Blake and Rachel Atkins.
