Communicating Doors

This score was composed, as requested by Ayckbourn, with some homage references to Bernard Herrmann. The set featured a fully working, plumbed in bathroom and there was a nod to Psycho in one shower related scene. The score was also influenced by various science fiction film scores such as the Vangelis Bladerunner music and Brad Fiedel's Terminator score. This score was reworked several times as technology advanced. I changed some of the cues when it was presented as part of the International Theatre Festival in Chicago. It was revised and updated for a revival directed by Ayckbourn at the SJT in 2010. The original production was operated using three Revox machines and some very complicated live cross fading on an analogue mixer. The 2010 production has multi-layered cues triggered and routed from a computer. There are now endless sound possibilities in live theatre, but nothing to rival the fun of creating sound effects loops using quarter inch Ampex 406, some sticky tape and an old broom handle. The West End production featured Julia Mckenzie as Ruella for the run at The Gielgud Theatre. The play subsequently transferred to the Savoy Theatre where Angela Thorne took over the role.
