about

i. Haunting Julia

For Haunting Julia Ayckbourn requested a piece of contemporary piano music that sounded as if it had been composed by Julia, the musical prodigy who gives this haunting play its title. This track was recorded in my studio with the unfortunate sound technician wedged under the piano with a pair of microphones and a Revox B77 reel to reel tape machine. The B77 was the staple of many SJT shows before they switched firstly to minidisc and then computer based systems. The control room at the theatre often had four tape machines running simultaneously to create complex soundscapes for Ayckbourn plays and productions. Haunting Julia originally ran without an interval in order to ramp up the supernatural tensions. Later productions had an interval inserted to boost bar sales.
The original production featured actor Ian Hogg (Det. Sgt. Alan Rockcliffe).

World Premiere: 20 April 1994
Venue: Theatre in the Round, Scarborough
London Premiere: 27 May 2011
Venue: Riverside Studios, London

ii. It could be any one of us

This theme includes an instrumental section of the song of the same name that Ayckbourn wrote to go with this revival. The song was sung by actress Janet Dibley. Ayckbourn asked for a Shirley Bassey, Goldfinger feel. Dibley certainly delivered and the lyrics involved Ayckbourn poking fun with rhymes such as: ‘It seems we’ve missed the final bus, it could be any one of us.’ This production also featured actor Jon Strickland, who played leading roles in many of Ayckbourn’s premiere productions at Scarborough.

World Premiere: 5 October 1983
Venue: Theatre in the Round, Scarborough

This score is from the revival directed by Alan Ayckbourn at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in 1996.
