Way Upstream

As the technology became more efficient at creating orchestral simulations, Ayckbourn asked me to become more and more filmic with my approach to musical scores. This score draws on the sweeping feel of epic Age of Sail and Pirate movies.
This production fully utilised the split level of the round stage at the SJT’s current home in the converted Odeon Cinema in Scarborough. The original production at Westwood had water a maximum of 2 inches deep, which was kept very murky to disguise the floor underneath. This 2003 revival featured deeper sections using a sub stage level, where the actors could jump into the river convincingly from the onstage boat. There was also a genuine indoor fifteen-minute rainstorm. This production featured actors Saskia Butler and Matthew Cottle.

This score is from the revival directed by Alan Ayckbourn at The Stephen Joseph Theatre in 2003.
