Things we do for Love

An ambitious design concept from Alan meant that the set for this play was three storeys high and took up the entirety of the small McCarthy Auditorium stage at the SJT. On the top floor only the legs of the actors were visible and in the basement, audiences only saw the actors from the chest up. The auditorium only seats 165 people so it was important that the play went on to bigger and better things, if only to justify the energy expended in putting it on. It enjoyed a long run at the Gielgud Theatre following an extensive National tour. Jane Asher played Barbara and Steven Pacey played Hamish. Some of the score has a distinctly Scottish feel in honour of the Highland references. The final section in the is the last music cue from the play. It starts small and with each new transposition to a new key, much like a Westlife song or the President’s speech from the film Independence Day, it becomes ever more exuberant and celebratory. At the read-through of the West End production the cast and crew all stood up and sang the School song, which is referenced in the play. The sheet music for this song is printed in the Samuel French edition of the play.
